What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a highly effective technique used by physical therapists involving the use of a fine-filament needle to treat a multitude of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. Your therapist will evaluate the problematic region for trigger points (tight bands of muscle), which may be causing pain. Once the necessary assessment has been performed, the needle is inserted directly into the site of tightness in order to reduce pain.
How does dry needling work?
Dry needling works by causing a micro-lesion within the tissues, which may cause a "twitch response" of the "injured" muscle. Research has shown that a twitch response will reduce the acidity of a muscle, improve blood flow to the tissues and reduce inflammation resulting in pain reduction.
How can this treatment help?
Dry needling is beneficial in reducing pain, improving flexibility and improving movement patterns. Your physical therapist will also include corrective exercises in your treatment in order to maximize the benefits of dry needling to guide you in the direction of a successful recovery.
Who can dry needling benefit?
Dry needling is used for the treatment of a variety of conditions that may include:
- Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Sciatica
- Headaches
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Sprains/Strains
Your physical therapist will perform an evaluation to see if dry needling is appropriate for you.
